Meet the Artist

Margaret Kelly Johnson

Born in Donalsonville, Georgia on November 15th, 1924.  She was the oldest of 5 siblings and grew up during the depression.  She learned to paint while working in a phototography studio where she hand painted photographs.  She was able to take some local art classes specializing in oils, acryic and watercolor.

Margaret married her husband in 1943 and raised two sons. She lived in Marietta, GA for over 60 years in the same house and moved to the Greenville, SC area to be close to family a few years ago.

She always sports a neck scarf and is known for quoting her Grandma Kelly with the motto “whatever works!”

She is excited for her upcoming 100th birthday!

The Process

Margaret works off of photographs and uses pencil to sketch out the picture.  Then she applies the paint. She started with oils and arcylics, then transitioned to watercolor many years ago.

Inspiring Future Generations

Margaret’s great grandchildren are some of her biggest fans.  They love to see her artwork and enjoy her teaching them some of her techniques. 

Family

Family is everything to Margaret. She keeps in touch with family weekly with hand written letters in beautiful cursive. She has learned to wirte emails and keep up with Facebook too!  She is good at keeping up birthdays for everyone – including over a hundred great nieces and nephews!

Let’s Party!

Margaret celebrated her 90th birthday back in 2014 with her first ride in a limousine.  She looks forward to what her 100th birthday has in store later in November!
